Club commended for lighting up kgotla

Kanye South Member of Parliament, Dr Lemogang Kwape has commended the Lotlhakane East Empowerment Club, for the ‘lighting up’ the village streets.

When unveiling 10 solar streetlights at the main kgotla, donated by Lotlhakane East Empowerment Club, Dr Kwape said the project was in line with self-reliance; one of the principles of the country’s Vision 2036.

“This means dependence in our own efforts and exerting them in building ‘our’ country the way we wish it to develop,” he said.

Dr Kwape hailed the club, which consisted mostly of business men and women, who originate from to Lotlhakane East, for lending a helping hand where they had identified a need.

He indicated that government was fully committed to developing all villages, lamenting however that COVID-19 had led hindered and halted such plans.  

Dr Kwape said it was humbling to be receiving a donation of the 10 streetlights from the club at a time when one would expect businesses to be on recovery.

He said if such a spirit could be nurtured further, the village would be a much better place.

“I would like to appeal to all of you to build your homes in this village to transform and develop ‘our’ village,” he said.

Dr Kwape noted that the solar lights would go a long way in not only bringing a facelift to the village, but making the village safer for the residents to enjoy the evenings around the Kgotla.

For his part, Lotlhakane East Empowerment, Chairperson, Mr Melao Botanka said the club was initially formed to keep the youth busy so that they could refrain from delinquent activities, but it has since shifted to focus on developmental issues, after the realization that more needed to be done.

Mr Botanka noted that the growing population had led to an increase in nocturnal criminal activities, adding that the streetlights would assist to curb such.

He said going forward, they intend to source more funds to put more solar lights around the village.

Mr Botanka said the club, whose motto was: ‘Let’s all drive in’; was open to all those who wished to join, and to dedicate themselves to promoting change and restoration of the village. ends
