High hopes for presidential visit

02 Nov 2021

Residents of Serowe are anxiously awaiting today’s visit by President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi who is expected to address a kgotla meeting in the village.

Chief among the issues that residents expect President Masisi to touch on are job creation for youth, state of the village’s internal roads, land allocation and ways in which government plans to resuscitate the economy.

In an interview, Serowe umbrella Village Development Committee chairperson, Mr Teko Thokweng told BOPA that joblessness remained the biggest challenge confronting residents, especially youth.

Because they were idle, some youth had resorted to drug and alcohol use as well as crime, he said.

Mr Thokweng stated that the land allocation waiting period was taking a toll on residents, some of whom had waited more than 20 years for residential plots.

A resident, Mr Goitsemang Matshogo said while he appreciated maintenance of Serowe/ Palapye Road and paving of some internal roads, many internal roads remained in a bad state and were a menace to public transport operators.

Mr Matshogo also appealed to government to lure investors to Serowe saying the village could do with another mall.

Three youths who have taken up street photography to make ends meet disclosed that high rentals have proved challenging, especially now that COVD-19 has dented their income.

The solution, according to Thato Casles, Christopher Petso and Dickson Wilson, is to have land to operate from and they are pinning their hopes on President Masisi to intervene and get the land board to hasten allocations.ends
