Govt collects P2.3bn via alcohol levy

Government has collected over P2.3 billion through the alcohol levy in the past five years, Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Edwin Dikoloti has said.
Responding to a question in Parliament on Friday, Dr Dikoloti said the ministry had, however, received P221 million, which represented about 10 per cent of the funds in the past five years. Conversely, he said collections had recently dropped as a result of COVID-19 restrictions, which targeted sale of alcoholic products.
“The ministry’s allocation fell from P50 million to P29 million in in 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 respectively. Nata-Gweta MP, Mr Polson Majaga had wanted to know how much had been collected through the alcohol levy fund in the past five years and whether the COVID-19 pandemic had negatively affected collection.
