Mayor underscores need for clean environment

 Selebi Phikwe mayor, Mr Lucas Modimana, has underscored the importance of a clean environment

Mr Modimana took part in the multi-sectoral clean-up campaign that kick-started at Botshabelo in Selebi Phikwe on Monday. 

He said the campaign would help eliminate any factors that could lead to spread of the corona virus since personal hygiene went hand in hand with clean environment. 

He thus urged the community to avoid littering particularly during the time of COVID-19 and advised them to dispose gloves and surgical masks accordingly to mitigate spread of the virus.  

He also commended Botshabelo community for active participation in this exercise, adding that their involvement made the exercise very successful.

“The council has mobilised resources from both local and central government and deployed Ipelegeng, Ward Development Committee members to help in the exercise,” he said 

Furthermore, Mr Modimana raised concerns over some people who dumped rubble on the outskirts of the town emphasising that the council was going to intensify on cleanliness by joining forces with the police to deal with such people. 

He said going forward, it was important for the council to come up with long term solutions to avoid having a recurrence of dirty environment, hence the need to assist the youth to come up with viable business projects geared towards recycling of waste. 

 He added that cooperatives would be engaged to facilitate youth interested in waste disposal projects which would also address issues of unemployment and poverty. 

The Clean-Up campaign will extend to Ikageleng ward on Tuesday until September 3rd at Kagiso, Sesame and Bontleng wards. ends
