No flood disasters anticipated
26 Aug 2021
Maun Administration Authority (MAA) Chairperson Mr Vepaune Moreti says the district is not anticipating any flood situation as the river system water levels and flows were low.
Addressing a council session in Maun on Tuesday, Mr Moreti said since the annual floods from the Okavango Delta had not reached Maun in June as expected, Boro, Thamalakane, Boteti, Kunyere, Gomoti River systems were experiencing a decrease of water levels.
He said Lake Ngami currently covered an area of 65 square kilometre out of its estimated 277 square kilometre which translated to 23.5 per cent.
He, however, said Lake Ngami was expected to remain wet for at least two years even if there was too little or no rainfall the coming rainy season between October and March 2022.
Boro River receives annual flows from Okavango Delta and flows into Thamalakane River in Maun, which then flows to Lake Ngami and Boteti River.
Okavango Delta receives flow from the rivers in the Angola and Namibia and its flow is determined by rainfall experienced in the two countries. ENDS
