Okavango councillors want inclusion of access roads in project

10 Aug 2021

Okavango sub-district councilors have agreed to a suggestion that a request be made to relevant ministries to consider inclusion of access roads in the Gumare/Mohembo road rehabilitation project.

After deliberating on the matter, councilors reached a consensus that the idea be presented at the next North West District full council meeting.

The suggestion was brought forward, by the chairperson Mr Mpoke Karapo, as an urgent matter on Monday at a special sub-council meeting.

The said access roads will include the Etsha 1, Etsha 6 and Etsha 13 roads up to Samochima village.

Advancing his reasons, Mr Karapo said for a long time people of such villages had decried long distances as public transport did not go through the villages because of bad access roads.

He also noted that the area was a wildlife region, hence walking such long distances after being dropped by buses along the main road posed risk to peoples’ lives, particularly with animals such as elephants.

The chairperson also said he deemed the matter urgent because a tender had been awarded for an asphalt overlay of the Gumare/Mohembo road, therefore it would be wise to just include the access roads component instead of having it as a standalone project as the process might take long. ends
