President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi on Thursday visited former Lobatse MP, Ms Moggie Mbaakanyi to convey condolences following the passing of her husband, Mr Moffat Mbaakanyi.
The 77-year-old Mr Mbaakanyi died on Monday due to COVID-19 related complications, according to his wife. In a brief message of condolences, Dr Masisi described Mr Mbaakanyi as a hard-working and loving person, who contributed a lot to the country’s development.
Dr Masisi said the deceased contributed particularly to the growth of the Botswana Meat Commission (BMC), where he worked for a long time.
The President further said Mr Mbaakanyi loved the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) and served it with diligence hence he urged the family and the Lobatse community to cherish and celebrate the deceased’s life and not feel sorrowful.
“You should know that for both the party and government this is a citizen to celebrate. We should celebrate his life instead of being sad,” he said.
The President expressed disappointment that many lives had been lost to the COVID-19 pandemic in this country. He explained that government efforts to procure vaccines to immunise the population hadd been frustrated by slowness of supply from manufacturers.
Apart from working for BMC for over two decades, Mr Mbaakanyi also served in the structures of BDP in Lobatse and was chairman of the Lobatse branch at one stage.
The deceased’s youngest daughter, Ms Nono Mbaakanyi thanked the President for taking time to console her family. Lobatse MP Dr Thapelo Matsheka also thanked the Dr Masisi for the gesture.
The deceased is survived by wife, who was Lobatse MP from 2004 to 2009, and eight children.
