Makwala in 4 x400 metres relay
06 Aug 2021
Isaac Makwala will today take part in the 4 x400 metres relay at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
This comes after Leungo Scotch who was in the initial line up complained of muscle injury, hence the technical team replaced him with Makwala, who was competing in the 400 metres finals yesterday.
National team coach Justice Dipeba, said in an interview this morning that they had wanted Makwala to rest, but they were left with no choice but to include him in the lineup today.
“Yesterday after the race Isaac approached us expressing his will to join in the race after realising that Scotch is not going to run due to a muscle injury and we really appreciated that coming from him,” he said.
Dipeba said it was ideal for Makwala to rest and only compete in the finals, adding that the lineup was made of countries such as World Relays champions Netherlands, Trinidad and Tobago, Italy, Great Britain, Czech Republic, United States of America and Germany.
He expressed appreciation that Makwala as the team’s captain put the country first.
Botswana team is made up of Isaac Makwala, Baboloki Thebe, Zibani Ngozi and Bayapo Ndori. Ends
