03 Aug 2021
Gaborone City Council is currently engaged in an annual exercise to carry out both routine and emergency maintenance on the streets light infrastructure.
When answering questions in Parliament, Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Sethabelo Modukanele confirmed that his ministry through the council developed a city illumination strategy in 2020/2021 financial year under which maintenance of street lights in the Gaborone Bonnington South Constituency was included.
He explained that there was a working team that was solely dedicated for routine maintenance of constituencies’ street lighting infrastructure inclusive of Gaborone Bonnington South.
The teams work on daily basis with Constituency leadership including the Honorable Member of Parliament, he said.
“Currently there are 1 882 street lights in Gaborone Bonnington South Constituency and 1 317 are functioning giving us 70 per cent functionality,” he said.
Mr Modukanele said council crew would continue with the routine inspection and spot maintenance of defective lights to ultimately achieve 100 per cent illumination.
Gaborone Bonnington South MP, Mr Christian Greef had asked when the last street light maintenance was carried out in the Gaborone Bonnington South Constituency; and how many street lights were working in the area.
He had also wanted to know how many needed maintenance. Ends
