Leading diamond company, Debswana has pledged P1.5 million to be awarded to all athletes and coaches participating at the ongoing Olympic Games held in Tokyo, Japan.
According to a press releases from Debswana, the money will be given to all athletes depending on medals won.
The release also says this will also include awards to all the athletes who may not have earned any medals as recognition for their effort, as well as a token of appreciation to the coaches.
“We join the nation in acknowledging that the athletes have risen against the challenges they have faced during the pandemic and funds constraints to make it to the event in Tokyo. We also acknowledge that the Olympic Games do not offer prize money to those who win medals; rather the athletes participate for national pride and to gain exposure,” said Lynette Armstrong, Debswana’s acting managing director.
The release further says Debswana continues to support sports development as part of their Building Forever sustainability strategy, as well as their commitment to supporting Botswana’s Vision 2036 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
It further states that Debswana is in talks with the Botswana Athletics Association to re-establish requirements for partnership towards the development of current and future crop of athletics teams in Botswana.
Additionally, it says Debswana will continue to work with various sporting codes in Botswana to deliver various sport development programmes. Ends
