Boxing team shapes up

13 Jul 2021

Botswana boxing team is settling well in Khabarovsk, Russia.

The team, which is under the tutelage of Lechezani Luza, is made up of Keamogetse Kenosi (57kg) and Rajab Mahommed (52kg),

Botswana Boxing Association (BOBA) spokesperson, Taolo Tlouetsile, said the International Boxing Association (AIBA) organised this training camp to accord the team time and space to prepare for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

He said this came after realisation that it was not easy for countries to organise training camps and friendly tournaments because of travel restrictions around the globe.

Furthermore, Tlouetsile said the camp, which attracted 10 countries; Algeria, Botswana, Congo, Morocco, Jordan, Trinidad, Mauritius, Venezuela, Guyana and the Dominican Republic, was strictly for Tokyo-bound boxers.

He said the camp would benefit Botswana boxers, given that they were using it as the last preparatory programme before the games, adding it would also help the coaches to gauge the boxers’ fitness, focus and mental strength.

“The only challenge for the team is that Kenosi still has to shed about 3kg to make her weight category. She is being assisted with fitness and conditioning by coach Boago Lentshaletse,” he said.

The boxing team would leave Russia on Sunday to join team Botswana in Yokohama, for the Olympics slated for July 23 to August 8.

Meanwhile, in athletics, Botswana would be represented by Nijel Amos, Isaac Makwala, Christine Botlogetswe, Amantle Montsho, Galefele Moroko and the men’s 4 x400 relay team.

James Freeman would represent the country in swimming, while Magdalene Moyengwa would  compete in weightlifting. Ends
