Women are progressively now making a mark on the golf course, a feat that has been recognised by the local magazine, Woman to Woman, which organised a Ladies Golf Networking tournament at Gaborone Golf Club on Saturday.
Founder and editor-in-chief of the magazine, Rosalind Kwinje said the initiative, which is the first for Woman to Woman magazine, aimed to promote golf as a sport of choice for women as well as to enhance value through corporate networking.
She said the tournament followed an extensive training programme between Woman to Woman and Excel Golf Training Academy, where 40 women from different corporate entities were engaged in a 10-week free golf coaching session. She said they realised that women had been closed in offices and homes since the lockdown that was imposed by COVID-19 hence the idea of a physical and mental wellness activity for them.
Kwinje said they started with a nine-hole golf tournament for ladies, particularly that most participating women were beginners.
She said they would also explore other sporting disciplines as the year progresses.
“Today, has been a good day and the turnout has been great with many companies coming to support us,” said Kwinje, who also expressed gratitude to the sponsors for entrusting them in their first sporting activity.Minister of Nationality, Immigration and Gender Affairs, Anna Mokgethi was among the women who participated in the tournament to support as well as engage in the sport.
Mokgethi, who is also an advocate of women empowerment, said in an interview that her participation at the tournament, was a way of giving moral support to women in sport. She said since most of them including herself, were first-timers and it was important to give them encouragement particularly that the sport was male-dominated.
Mokgethi noted that the ministry’s mission was to always support women adding that it was their responsibility to ensure that women were advanced in various sport codes. She further said the ministry’s overall mandate was to ensure that there was equality in all spheres of life in Botswana. She encouraged women to actively participate in other economic activities in the construction, mining, engineering, manufacturing industry. ENDS
