21 Jun 2021

Councillor for Gani/Nxaunxau, Mr Kandondi Shakatenya, has requested authorities to consider powering Chukumuchu clinic from the primary school’s solar plant .

Speaking during a meeting between the village leadership and the Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development recently, Mr Shakatenya said the capacity of the solar plant at Chukumuchu Primary School could be increased to enable it to power both the school and the clinic as well as public officers’ houses.

The councillor stated that people in rural areas deserved to stay abreast with happenings around the world, therefore  television and radio, among other media platrforms, were the way to go, hence the need for electricity.

He said electrifying remote areas was also critical for their developments and growth.

On a different matter, the councillor decried the bad state of the Shakawe-Chukumuchu main gravel road, which deteriorated during rainy seasons.

He said accessing services from Shakawe was difficult for the residents of Chukumuchu due to the bad state of the road.

In response, the assistant council secretary at Okavango Sub-district Council, Mr Losika Kula, said the request to connect Chukumuchu clinic to the primary school’s solar plant could be looked into, though it was an initiative between the ministries of basic education and local government to ensure that schools far from services had access to electricity to improve education.  Ends
