The Minister of Basic Education, Mr Fidelis Molao has commended the contractor engaged to construct the centre for children with severe disability for executing a quality project despite challenges encountered.
The P183-million project was awarded to Sharps Construction who started the project in January 2020 with completion expected by February 15, 2022.
Speaking after touring the project, which was reported to be progressing well and ahead of schedule, Mr Molao appreciated efforts made by the contractor.
He noted that the centre was one of the kind in the country and hoped it would open doors next year April.
Once completed, he said, the centre, would provide a support system to children with severe and multiple disabilities in Maun and the country at large.
He said currently government could not absorb some people living with severe disabilities as they needed specialised facilities, care and services.
The project, he said would also save costs as the government continued to spend a lot of money sending some people with severe disabilities to South Africa to access specialised services.
“We took a decision to construct the facility here in Maun because we wanted people with severe disabilities to feel part of the society and easily access services just like other ordinary people. I am happy that the facility is on track and that it will serve the intended purpose,” he added.
Earlier on, the project manager from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing Development, Mr Molefi Rakanye informed the minister and his entourage that the project was progressing well, stating that progress status stood at the planned 63 per cent.
He stated that the contractor experienced some challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which made it difficult to procure some materials due to movement restrictions. He, however, said the contractor decided to take another route by importing material from Namibia.
He also mentioned that heavy rainfalls experienced in Maun also delayed the project including shortage of skilled manpower in Maun.
The site agent, Ms Holly Maitseboa explained that most of the works were nearing completion, citing the administration blocks, classrooms, laboratories and staff houses.
Ms Maitseboa also pointed out that the project had a guest house comprising of 27 rooms, which would be used by parents when visiting their children.
Maun East MP, Mr Goretetse Kekgonegile appreciated the minister’s visit saying it was an indication that his ministry wanted to change the way things had been done.
“It is pleasing to see leaders providing checks and balance to appreciate what is on the ground rather than relying on submitted reports by officials,” he added.
Mr Kekgonegile also thanked the contractor for executing the project up to specification and expectation and hoped the project would create more employment opportunities once completed. ends
