07 Jun 2021

Serowe Police has recorded 257 cases of non-compliance to COVID-19 regulations in Serowe and surrounding areas.

In an interview,  Officer Commanding District No 2. Senior Superintendent Paul Oketsang said 31 people were charged with failure to practice social distancing while 171 were charged for not wearing masks and seven were charged for selling traditional beer before or after stipulated hours.

Senior Superintendent Oketsang said despite being regularly cautioned about the pandemic people, chose to ignore the laid down rules.

He expressed worry that some people still exceeded the stipulated numbers at funerals and weddings and serve food to ‘those large numbers’ something he said was against the COVID -19 protocols.

However, he said that police embarked on an operation to inspect the conduct of people at funerals.

“The very same people who were cautioned against overcrowding at funerals did not comply with the regulations, such as wearing masks and maintaining social distance,” he said.

This, he said showed that people deliberately ignored the protocols.

Further, Senior Superintendent Oketsang said some people did not adhere to the curfew times while others still hosted and attended parties despite the increase of COVID-19 cases.

Despite the government’s effort to fight COVID-19 through Dinwele Dladleng campaign, he said people still gathered at prohibited areas such as bars.

He said they had also observed that some churches did not follow COVID-19 regulations and some churches had been charged for exceeding the prescribed number.

He nevertheless said that they would continue to charge people who failed to comply with the law. Ends
