Vaccination crucial for tourism revival
03 Jun 2021
Member of Parliament for Maun West, Mr Dumelang Saleshando has appealed to those eligible for COVID-19 vaccines to take the jab.
Addressing residents of Maun this week, Mr Saleshando said having a large vaccinated population would help attract tourists to the north west region, as tourists believed a vaccinated population equalled less chances of contacting the virus.
He said Ngami Health Management Team statistics indicated that only eight per cent of the area’s population was vaccinated. He urged more adults to take the vaccine.
He said the health team had also promised to increase vaccine centres by including health posts and dikgotla in efforts to reach many people.
Mr Saleshando also urged residents to keep on ensuring proper use of masks, hand sanitisation and social distancing. He noted that the COVID-19 vaccine was not a cure but only helps to strengthen immunity.
He said reviving the tourism industry was important to create jobs as many people who worked in the industry had lost their jobs due to the pandemic.
On other issues, Mr Saleshando said his plan was to prioritise education using the P10 million constituency development fund. He said technology laboratories were planned to built in schools in Maun West constituency, adding that most of them performed dismally.
He said the other plan was to build a Standard One to Four school for Boro residents to address challenges faced by learners who travelled long distances to the nearest schools. He also noted that the North West District Council planned to build a primary school in Senonnori Ward in Maun.
The councillor for Senonnori-Boro Ward, Mr Kenson Kgaga said there was hope for the envisioned primary school as the council had indicated that it was awaiting the financial year that started in April.
He said a place had already been identified and secured for the primary school.
During his welcome remarks, Senonnori Village Development Committee chairperson, Mr Matshidiso Banyatsang lamented lack of primary schools for both Boro and Senonnori wards.
He also said there was need for street lights and a road connecting the ward to the main road.ends
