Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Setlhabelo Modukanele has hailed efforts by New Xade residents to build a project to be used to water livestock of the Remote Area Development Programme (RADP) beneficiaries.
Speaking after touring the constituency community funded project recently, Mr Modukanele was informed that the P1.3 million project was not big enough to water all the cattle and that beneficiaries volunteered to complete the project, a move Mr Modukanele said was a true reflection of self-reliance.
He said if the same could be emulated by others across the country, the dependency syndrome would be a thing of the past.
He encouraged all to adopt the spirit of self-reliance, saying the natural resources that the country relied on to support local economies were becoming depleted.
He also said COVID-19 had paralysed economies, hence it was difficult for government to support all its people.
Mr Modukanele said the upcoming generation should be brought up knowing the importance of self-reliance.
Ghanzi acting council secretary, Mr Omphile Mosweu had earlier told the assistant minister that following Water Utilities Corporation’s stand that it could no longer afford to water RADP livestock from boreholes, the council looked for source of water and the project came about.
The project included equipping the borehole, water reticulation, building kraals as well as constructing a house for the borehole operator.
Mr Mosweu noted that kraals were constructed by beneficiaries without any remuneration, and that a contractor was engaged for water reticulation works.
The project, which started in February, was envisaged to be completed by March, but shortage of materials hindered its delivery .
The area MP, Mr Motsamai Motsamai, urged residents to shun gender based violence.
He warned males who denied females a chance to look for employment that it was wrong and that females should be allowed to work and provide for their families.
MP Motsamai also informed residents that the village was earmarked to benefit from the power line expansion project. ends
