COVID-19 cases on rise in Boteti sub-district

31 May 2021

Boteti deputy district commissioner, Mr Ewetse Selelo has expressed concern about the escalating COVID-19 cases in the sub-district.

Following a report by the regional Health Management Team coordinator (DJMT), Ms Gasebotho Kedikilwe during a recent COVID-19 meeting, Mr Selelo said there was need for robust action to reduce the numbers.

He cautioned members of the public against self-diagnosing, advising people who have any flu-like symptoms to go for a COVID-19 test.

He also urged all stakeholders to come on board, saying the pandemic was not a DHMT issue, but a national one that needed to be prioritised.

Ms Kedikilwe had earlier indicated that most positive cases were caused by lack of compliance to COVID-19 protocols during parties, weddings and funerals. She said most of the people who succumbed in the Boteti region were aged between 60 and 75, with some having had underlying conditions.

Ms Kedikilwe said it was crucial for people with flu signs to test so that interventions could be implemented at an early stage and boost immunity.

She warned that hot beverages were not treatment, but just soothing agents.

Meanwhile, Dr Karabo Modise, a general practitioner and occupational medicine practitioner at Lucara Mine, said the mine experienced a significant increase in cases in May. He noted that they stood at 26 while No 8 district administration officer, Superintendent Obert Manji said Letlhakane police were also hard hit as nine officers were affected. ends
