Majwe AM570 Cycling Challenge donates to education sector

 Majwe AM570 Cycling Challenge has raised P2.4 million towards the education sector and the sanitary pads project.

The cycling challenge was held in honour of the late Debswana Diamond Company managing director, Mr Albert Milton

It was revealed during the beneficiary announcement and cheque handover on Friday that P1.8 million would be donated to the education sector and that P1.6 million had been devoted to building two classroom blocks while P200 000 would go towards the sanitary pads project. 

Minister of Basic Education (MoBE), Mr Fedelis Molao thanked the organisers of the challenge for identifying the education sector as the deserving beneficiary. He said the classroom blocks, hardware equipment, including printers and copiers, would help would go a long way to enhance teaching and learning in schools.

 Minister Molao expressed gratitude to the organisers, Ms Milton and her family, together with Majwe Mining for embarking on the fundraising. . 

Majwe AM570 Cycling Challenge board chairperson, Ms Basadi Tlhabano said her team took note of all concerns from the ministry, and specifically looked at the dangers posed by congestion in classrooms in the midst of COVID-19. 

“Classroom blocks are a necessity because we want to keep all our children in school. That is our way of contributing to a knowledge-based economy,” she said. Ms Tlhabano underscored that the Majwe AM570 Cycling Challenge financials were audited by an independent auditing firm to ensure accountability and transparency since they were dealing with public funds. 

She added that after careful consideration and many site visits, the team decided to sponsor the construction of classroom blocks at two schools in the Jwaneng Mine zone of influence.

She emphasised that the board was currently engaging with key stakeholders to re-affirm the already identified schools. 

     She added that the process would be closed this coming week.ends
