Obey road safety signs - MVA

30 May 2021

The Department of Road and Transport Safety, in collaboration with Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund, Mahalapye police and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) on Thursday held a commemoration of the 6th United Nations (UN) global road safety where pupils were encouraged to obey road safety signs.

Speaking during an interview at Tamocha Memorial School, principal transport officer, Ms Kelebogile Koolopile said due to the high number of accidents involving primary school children, they decided to demonstrate and teach children how to cross the road.

She said although learners seemed to have difficulty when crossing roads, they seemed to have knowledge about road safety signs, which made it easy for coordinators to work with them.

“The event was held under the theme: ‘# love 30’ which focuses on the city streets safety and introduction of 30km/h speed limit in cities and build up areas such as school zones,” Ms Koolopile explained.

She further emphasised that drivers would be required to observe a 30 kilometres per hour speed limit around schools to protect pupils.

She said the object of the event was to mark the beginning of the new UN global decade of action for road safety 2021-2030, which aims to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries by 50 per cent by the year 2030. ENDS
