Maun Airport police are investigating an incident in which a 56-year-old man was attacked and killed by a leopard in one of the safari campsites in the Okavango Delta over the weekend.
Station commander, Superintendent Wetshootsile Pule confirmed the incident, saying they received a report from some officials at Desert and Delta Safari Company that one of their employees was killed by a leopard.
He said it was reported that the deceased, who resided at the campsite, met his fate around 6am on his way to work.
Superintendent Pule noted that the body of the deceased, who originates from Maun, was at Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital awaiting postmortem, while investigations continued.
Meanwhile, Sehithwa Police Station commander, Superintendent Nshaki Mabophiwa has expressed concern about some people who continued to violate curfew regulations.
He stated that nine people were charged for failing to observe curfew regulations at Kareng over the weekend.
The patrol team, he said, found the affected people and others illegally gathered at one of the shebeens in the village and requested for reinforcement from the office.
Upon arrival of the police officers, he said the people ran away, but the patrol team managed to arrest and charge seven of them P200 each for failure to adhere to curfew regulations, while the owner of the shebeen was charged P1 000 for unlawful gathering and selling alcohol during the curfew period.
Superintendent Mabophiwa said the team also seized the alcohol, which would be handed over to the council to destroy.
Still in Kareng, he said one liquor restaurant owner was charged P1 000 for unlawfully selling alcohol during curfew time.
The police chief also decried increasing incidents of speeding along the Maun-Ghanzi road, after they recorded 20 cases over the weekend. He appealed to road users to obey road signs and also exercise caution as there were animals roaming the road. Ends
