Few show interest in Jwaneng Galaxy committee positions

Premiership champions, Jwaneng Galaxy held its elective annual general meeting in Jwaneng on Sunday, with a surprisingly low interest for various positions in the committee.
In fact, the club was last week forced to postpone the deadline for submissions of nominees by a few days after it realised the low interest.

During the elections day, out of all the nine positions available to be filled, only that of facilities manager attracted more than one candidate, while four of the positions had one candidate each standing unopposed.

The other four positions did not attract even a single nominee, with members resorting to making nominations from the floor.

The club’s public relations officer, who was one of those that was unopposed, Tankiso Morake said the issue of low interest in standing for positions in the committee might be due to the fact that most Galaxy supporters were not card carrying members.

“We have a problem with most of our supporters being just supporters without subscribing for club membership, which means that they cannot take part in our annual general meetings. It’s a concerning issue that people need education on,” he said.

Morake said people just love activities in that they would not mind attending soccer games without being affiliated to the club. He said most of the supporters that often fill up the stadium in their home games were just soccer loving residents of Jwaneng without club membership cards.

“We have one of the highest home game attendances, perhaps only after Township Rollers and Extension Gunners, but when we go on away games, especially far away games like in Francistown, our supporters are always so paltry low,” he said.Morake said failure by their supporters to subscribe for membership also gave the club a headache as it reduced competiveness of committee member positions, which might lead to positions being filled by incompetent people.

During the elections, Onkamile Robert was retained as the secretary general while Sarah Oremeng took the marketing manager position.

Logistics manager position was filled by Letlhogonolo Mapoka after being elected by 19 people against eight for John Phuthego and four for Letumile Tukumase.

Gaone Motswasele came in as the new logistics manager while sports organiser and communications manager were filled by Patrick Mokganya and Tebogo Ramere respectively. The new vice chairperson position went to Lesenyo Mapharing.

Meanwhile, the club chief executive officer, Bennett Mamelodi indicated that their main sponsor, Debswana was yet to forward the names for positions of chairman and treasurer.

The club made a resolution at its 2018 annual general meeting that the two slots should be given to the main sponsor to fill with its preferred individuals. ENDS
