MPs office commits to contain COVID-19

24 May 2021

The MP for Moshupa/Manyana, Mr Karabo Gare has reiterated his office’ commitment to fight the spread of COVID-19.

For that reason, he said the office was open to assist with fumigating public places with an aim to reduce the spread of the virus.

Mr Gare said this recently in an interview at the launch of fumigation exercise, which kick-started at Mmanaana Junior Secondary School in Moshupa.

“The President has made it clear that one of his key priorities is to ensure that Batswana are safe from COVID-19 through implementation of life-saving programmes including successful and timely vaccination, hence this commitment,” he said.

Mr Gare, also the Minister of Agricultural Development and Food Security, said his Parliamentary office bought the fumigation machine to spray public places and where people crowded. Susceptible places, he said, included clinics, police stations as well as funeral events.

“Today we are in Mmanaana JSS targeting areas where teachers and students are predisposed such as staff room, laboratories, kitchen, recreational area, library and ablutions,” he said.

The MP said the move would significantly reduce potential spread of the COVID-19 among the pupils.

He noted that they would also do the same at Diratsame JSS, Moshupa Police Station, Lotlhakane West kgotla and schools then move to Manyana.

He said this was an ongoing exercise that would be conducted until the pandemic subsided.

The MP, therefore, advised the public to continue adhering to the set health protocol as the exercise did not mean that the fight was over.  He said the best option was to prevent the spread of COVID-19 to avoid overwhelming the country’s health systems. People should bear in mind that the country had limited resources, he emphasised.

“We need to continue social distancing, washing hands regularly or sanitising and properly wearing masks,” he explained.

For his part, Mmanaana JSS head, Mr Petrus Mosomane hailed the MP’s office for the initiative as it would go a long way in assisting to reduce cases of COVID-19.

His school, he said, had cases of the virus and this caused confusion among pupils and teachers.

“We have had cases of students on isolation, others quarantined including teachers and the general staff,” he said.

Mr Mosomane said going forward they would come up with a schedule so that such an exercise was done regularly to prevent the spread of the virus. Ends
