Mmathethe community asks for doctor
24 May 2021
Residents of Mmathethe in the Southern District have appealed to government to provide them with a medical doctor.
The request was made by the secretary of Mmathethe East Village Development Committee, Ms Doreen Kemoabe, on behalf of the community in a consultative meeting with Vice President Mr Slumber Tsogwane recently at Mmathethe kgotla.
Ms Kemoabe said patients from Mmathethe and surrounding settlements currently travelled to Good Hope to consult a doctor since their clinic did not have a doctor.
She said the clinic had 19 nurses only.
“We do not have a doctor in our village, but Mmathethe is a big village and the clinic here also caters for surrounding settlements,” she said.
Ms Kemoabe further appealed for provision of accommodation for the clinic staff, saying that only three of the nurses had accommodation.
She also asked for refurbishment of buildings and facilities at the clinic, stating that the current ones were old.
She also requested for provision of mobile clinics to ease congestion of patients at the clinic.
The VDC secretary asked for construction of culverts in the village to aid residents to cross flooding streams during the rainy period.
She said villagers had been constantly asking for culverts over the last 30 years, but nothing had been done.
“The Moselebe River poses serious danger to the community during the rainy period, especially to students of Mmathethe Junior Secondary School.
Our children are not safe from the flooding water,” she said.
Community elder and former Member of Parliament for the constituency, Mr Peter Siele, appealed for better internal roads in Mmathethe.
Mr Siele said internal roads in the village had been in a bad state since being damaged by heavy rains some few years ago. Ends
