Residents of Mmathethe have been assured that the village’s water supply problems would end after completion of the Lobatse project.

The assurance was given by Vice President Slumber Tsogwane  during a consultative meeting in Mmathethe recently.

He explained that the project would source water from the North-South Carrier pipeline to supply the town and Southern District villages within its supply zone.

“The project is part of a programme to construct water infrastructure around the country using money from the World Bank,” Mr Tsogwane said.

Currently at construction phase, he said the project encompassed upgrading of water infrastructure from Gaborone to Lobatse and erection of a pump station to increase supply to the town and some villages.

He said upon completion, the new infrastructure would significantly address water shortages in the Lobatse water supply zone up to 2042.

Goodhope Sub-district Council senior administration officer for development, Mr Goaletsa Keitumetse informed the vice president that Mmathethe, with a daily water requirement of 1.1 million litres, was getting most of its water supply through  bowsing of only 300 000 litres per day.

However, he said the village would soon get an additional 400 000 liters per day from a new borehole at Ramontsi.

Mr Keitumetse said other major development projects in the constituency included tarring of Mmathethe-Bray and Kgoro-Gathwane roads.

In his welcome remarks, acting chief, Mr Reuben Mosala, asked for the vice president’s intervention in the stalled construction of the Mmathethe service centre.

“Up to now different contractors have come on site and left without finishing the project. We do not know what is happening. But a lot of money is being spent on it,” he said of the Economic Stimulus Package funded project.

Mr Mosala also appealed for government assistance in the reconstruction of the village’s two kgotla structures gutted by fire three years ago.

“Through financial contributions from the community we have managed to rebuild part of the shelter structure. However, we still need more funds to complete the project,” he said. Ends
