The Yarona FM Fatboy Challenge on Friday, handed over an outdoor gym to Gaborone West Community, an initiative that was applauded by the city mayor, Mr Father Maphongo.
Mr Maphongo stated during the handing over of the facility at Diphetogo Ward that though times were hard, the radio station and its partners sacrificed the little they had to donate the community project.
He said the gym was a welcome development and urged Gaborone West residents to put it to good use.
“This project is essential during the pandemic period, our bodies need to be healthy to fight this virus,” he said.
Mr Maphongo said the place could function as a networking space where people could come together and share business ideas.
The city mayor also thanked Diphetogo Ward councilor, Mr Tshepho Moloko for engaging Yarona fm to donate to the community.
Yarona FM board member, Mr Dumi Lopang indicated that the Fatboy Challenge started in 2007 as a diet programme and introduced the exercise part upon realising that people regained the weight they had lost when they stopped dieting.
Diseases such as diabetes, he said could be controlled or stopped completely through regular exercise.
He said with support from their partners, the initiative would be rolled out to other parts of the country.
Incepta Communications managing director, Mr Thabo Majola congratulated Yarona fm for the initiative, noting that he was a living example of its results. “I lost 15 kilograms of body weight in three months,” he said.
He urged the residents to take advantage of the facility, to positively work on their lives, indicating that when someone needed to succeed in any venture, they had to be in a good health state.
Yarona fm station manager, Ms Kelly Ramputswa-Tlale said the idea behind the donation was to encourage residents to exercise and was also their way of giving back to the community.
She highlighted that the donation came at an opportune time during the COVID-19 pandemic since they believed that exercise could help manage the disease.
The facility has been in use for about a month and Ms Ramputswa-Tlale said the community was quite excited about it.
For his part, Mr Moloko expressed gratitude to Yarona FM and their partners for the donation and noted that the community was also grateful.
“Exercise is very important, it helps the body to fight diseases and prolongs the number of years one can live,” he said.
He urged the community to take good care of the facility since it was of great importance. ENDS
