Sub-council chair encourages customers to pay WUC
19 May 2021
Good Hope Sub-district council chairperson, Mr Boniface Leshomo, has expressed concern about money owed to Water Utilities Corporation (WUC).
Addressing a sub-district council meeting on Monday, Mr Leshomo encouraged government institutions, businesses and the community to pay their water service debts.
He said customers in the sub- district owed over P6.6 million to the corporation.
He said individual customers owed the highest amount of over P5.8 million, followed by businesses at almost P378 000, while council and government institutions owed around P365 000 and P58 000 respectively.
Mr Leshomo said though the corporation would not disconnect customers for non-payment due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it would, however, consider efforts of encouraging payment by regulating water pressure at defaulters’ households. He further said the corporation would use debt collectors to assist in recovery of the outstanding debt, adding that customers would be given 30 days notice starting June 1 to pay or enter into payment plans to avoid inconvenience.
“On the lapse of the 30 days, all outstanding debt will be handed over to the debt collectors and all costs associated with the debt collection process will be borne by the customer,” he said.
Mr Leshomo said water supply in the sub-district continued to face challenges mainly because of ailing ground water sources and aged infrastructure transporting water to the sub-district from the Gaborone-Lobatse water supply scheme.
He, however, said the Matimela Borehole yielding five cubic metres per hour and supplying Gamokoto, started operating in February.
He added that another borehole was recently commissioned in Kgoro, also with a yield of five cubic metres per hour to augment water supply in Pitsane.
He revealed that there was budget allocation to resuscitate sewerage system in Good Hope and improve water supply to the village through recommissioning of BH (Borehole) 6208 in Madingwane. ends
