16 May 2021

Kgosi Aupa Mokabedi of Lekgolobotlo has decried the high crime rate by some youth.

In an interview, Kgosi Mokabedi said there was a surge in crime committed by some youth despite punishment against such youth.

He said there was need for the village leadership to find the root cause and a long lasting solution to the problem.

Kgosi Mokabedi said those caught committing offences were given four strokes to rehabilitate them.

He also noted that incidents of stock theft had gone up in the village and the periphery, saying there was an urgent need for the village leadership to come up with strategies to address the challenge.

He said although it was within the rights of  suspects to seek legal  representation in stock theft cases, the dispensation was a disadvantage to farmers who could not afford lawyers as they ended up losing their cattle to thieves.

He said the fermentation of illegal concoctions was also soaring  although law enforcement officers continued to confiscate such brews and apportion appropriate charges for such offences.

Kgosi Mokabedi also said illegal concoctions contributed to social ills bedeviling the village hence the need to stop them.

On other issues, Kgosi Mokabedi said village developments were progressing well, noting that villagers were engaged in a brick moulding business. He said they purchased the brick moulding machine through constituency community funding as well as building a post office through the same fund.

For her part, Village Development Committee chairperson, Ms Norah Makwa said the brick moulding project was aimed at generating income, creating jobs and developing the village.

She said the brick making project would be run by a committee autonomous from the VDC after completing the constitution that would facilitate its running.

Ms Makwa said they would sell their bricks in the village and outside, noting that the project would help them in building public servants houses as they were in dire need of accommodation. ends
