Kgatleng District Population and Development Profile 2021 is an important document in the development planning process as it promotes and supports evidence-based decision-making.

National Council on Population and Development chairperson, Ms Irene Kwape said this officially launching the profile in Mochudi recently.

Ms Kwape said the profile indicated that the population of Kgatleng District grew from 73 507 in 2001 to 91 660, representing a 25 per cent increase.

“We anticipate that the upcoming census will show that the district has grown even more, given the demand for land over the past decade due to its proximity to the capital city,” she said, adding that such presented opportunities and challenges which, through sound planning, could be vital for development of the district.

Furthermore, Ms Kwape said the profile document revealed the rich culture and heritage available in Kgatleng, which, if well harnessed, could position the district as a preferred tourist destination and accrue the necessary benefits to its communities, through the Local Economic Development initiative.

According to Ms Kwape, the report further highlighted a number of population and development concerns that needed to be addressed, among them, high teenage pregnancy rates, poverty and unemployment, high levels of internal migration.

In that regard, she said, there was need for the district to come up with actionable mitigation measures for the specified challenges.

“I anticipate that some may not need substantial resources to accomplish.

This may only take proper coordination of key stakeholders to work together towards a common goal,” she said. Ends
