Elders urged to take the vaccine

13 Apr 2021

The elderly have been implored to heed government’s call and take the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

Speaking at the commencement of COVID-19 vaccination for North East District in Masunga on Monday, North East District Management Team coordinator, Ms Kelebeletse Mokobela stated that it was critical to vaccinate elders aged 75 and above upon realising that COVID-19 affected them severely compared to other ages.

However, she stated that the vaccine was not a cure for the virus, hence called on people to continue adhering to health protocols; wearing masks, social distancing, and sanitizing.

She encouraged vaccinated individuals to keep in touch with medical officers in case they experience severe side effects.

She highlighted that North East District had commenced vaccination in Masunga, Tshesebe and Makaleng, adding that the roll out would soon be extended to other villages.

She assured the public that the vaccination would eventually reach every Motswana wherever they are.

In his remarks North East District Council deputy chairperson, Mr Zibani Mbalambi said the commencement of the vaccination campaign was a historic moment for the district as they had waited in anticipation for vaccine arrival.

He said COVID-19 had taken a toll on people lives and on the country’s economy, which prompted government to act accordingly and roll out the vaccine.

He advised the elderly to stress the importance of wearing masks to their children so that they do not contract the virus.

Kgosi Thabo Monaga of Masunga said the vaccine was meant to protect the body from contracting the virus.

He indicated that COVID-19 had proven to be more severe on the elderly, mainly because of their underlying illnesses that weaken their immune system.

Kgosi Monaga encouraged the elderly to trust in the healthcare system and feel free to take the vaccine.

95-year-old Mr Timothy Masole, who was the champion of the vaccine in Masunga, called on the elderly to have confidence in the healthcare system and use this opportunity to take the vaccine first.

He thanked government for prioritisng elders by vaccinating them, noting that it was an endeavour to protect them from the atrocity that is COVID-19.

Mr Masole said his willpower to be at the forefront of the vaccination was driven by his dream to see his grandchildren grow. Ends
