Chairperson cautions illegal occupants of govt boreholes
25 Mar 2021
A stern warning has been issued to those who have allocated themselves government boreholes.Addressing a virtual full council meeting on Tuesday, Ghanzi District Council chairperson, Mr Thato Tshweneyagae said the water and sanitation department was intensifying penalties to suppress the growing trend of illegal occupation and self-allocation of government boreholes.
He said some occupied boreholes that were used for the Charleshill/Ncojane road and cautioned them against doing so.
Mr Tshweneyagae was also concerned about some water users, small and large abstractors, who were still reluctant to apply for water rights. He said the water and sanitation department had reported non payment by customers who had leased government boreholes, and that 10 boreholes leased to individuals and syndicates in the district were not paid for in quarter three.
He warned that action would be taken against persons.
Regarding lack of Environmental Impact Assessment or hydrogeological assessment for projects such as irrigation and filling station, he said it threatened vulnerable water resources in the district and that the needful should be done. ends
