Women have been described as pillars in the prosperity of every society as evidenced by the Setswana proverb: Mosadi ke thari ya Setshaba.
This was said by Deputy Commissioner of Botswana Police Service, Ms Dinah Marathe during the commemoration of International Women’s Day by Botswana police on Friday.
“We are here to celebrate us women and in particular to appreciate the valuable professional and leadership contributions that we make in law enforcement and in society. Throughout history, the central role of women in society has ensured the stability, progress and long-term development of nations,” she said.
She noted that in policing, women have been globally recognised as agents that create a more balanced public safety environment, hence they were a fundamental part of contemporary policing.
“As Botswana Police Service Women Network, we celebrate this under the sub-theme: Building resilient women in the Botswana Police Service,” she said.
She said the historic and current contribution of women in the fight against crime was indisputable. She also said women police officers had effectively participated in efforts to combat crime in society through various initiatives in the same manner and vigour as their male colleagues.
She applauded women for being the backbone of development under difficult situations. She also hailed them as pinnacles of the economy, both in the formal and informal sectors.
For her part, BPS Deputy Director, Ms Goitseone Ngono said women performed multi-faceted roles of being daughters, sisters, friends, wives, mothers and caretakers.
This year’s International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 8 under the theme: Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 World.ENDS
