Kenya Acting High Commissioner to Botswana, Mr Jarso Boru says tree-planting will prosper more and help Botswana to achieve its goals on sustainable development and fight climate change effects.

Speaking during Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital tree planting spearheaded by GreenBotswana, he encouraged them to keep the spirit of tree planting going further as they have done before.

He noted that this noble gesture would prosper more and help Botswana achieve sustainable development.

Mr Boru said such linked perfectly with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No:15 on Climate Action, which was further strengthened through the Paris climate accord and other climate meetings.

He said Kenya was fully committed to tree planting as the regional host to the United Nations Environmental Organ and also wished to honour the legacy of the late Professor Wangari Mathai, who was a champion of environment protection, advocacy towards sustainable use of the environment and fight against climate change.

He said that in this respect, Professor Wangari was a well renowned and celebrated environmentalist and the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

“In her campaign, she managed to surpass planting of one million trees and to date, more than one million trees have been planted in her honour.”

Ambassador Boru said trees were vital in life as they provided fruits at the same time, taking in carbon mono-oxide and giving people oxygen.

People like to see trees being green as they provide fruits and shelter at the same time beautifying the earth and protecting it from soil erosion during rainy seasons.

Founder of GreenBotswana, Ms Sela Motswane said her business of tree-planting came as part of change and brings solution to effects of climate change.

She noted that the tree planting exercise inspired other people in the community to start planting trees. Ends
