Officer calls for gender equality
09 Mar 2021
Acting senior gender officer in Maun, Ms Gagoope Modimoosi says gender equality should be given priority at the family level.
Ms Modimoosi, who was speaking at the International Women’s Day commemoration organised by Women Against Rape (WAR) in Maun on Monday, said attaining gender equality was slow as only a few women were in leadership positions.
Ms Modimoosi said gender equality should be imparted to children from a young age, adding that gender equality meant equal opportunities for both men and women and employing people regardless of their gender.
She also noted that COVID-19 had significantly affected women as some had lost business opportunities while others had to help their children who had lost their jobs.
In her remarks, Kgosi Kealetile Moremi challenged women to continue lobbying government on issues that affected them.
She said Batswana should move forward on women political representation like their counterparts in developed countries. The guest speaker, First National Bank Botswana Maun branch manager, Ms Kelebogile Disang said women should strive to support one another as they had the potential and numbers.
Ms Disang urged women to continue with their contribution to the development of the country, saying their efforts may not be recognised now but would be in the future. She encouraged women to play their part in ensuring that children adhered to all COVID-19 protocols. ENDS
