Various speakers eulogised the late Mr Mogwe as a modest son of Botswana whose sharp mind saw him rise from humble beginnings to an enigmatic diplomat who not only shaped  Botswana’s foreign policy, but also played a pivotal role in the development of the country.

In his message of condolence, President Mokgweetsi Masisi said there would never be enough words to describe the immense and sterling contribution Mr Mogwe made to the development of the country. Mr Mogwe was a devoted school teacher and civil servant who scaled the heights to become Permanent Secretary to the President, cabinet minister and influential diplomat and peacemaker in the Southern African region and beyond.

The statement described Mr Mogwe as one of the architects of modern Botswana and an exemplary and selfless leader, a true gentleman, a hero to many Batswana and people in other countries.

Kgosi Motswakgakala Sealetsa of Goo-Motebejana Ward in Kanye described Mr Mogwe as an iconic figure, adding that his account of the history of Botswana was moving and absorbing.

Kgosi Sealetsa said Mr Mogwe was adored by many in his ward and that he was a rare breed of a leader who performed whatever assignments they undertook with nationalism, patriotism, undivided commitment and integrity.

He pleaded with the deceased’s family members to carry on the legacy of Mr Mogwe, particularly in the areas of social responsibility and nation building.

The deceased grandchild, Mr Marc Mogwe-Jansen described his grandfather as a pillar of the family values. He added that his love for his family was second to none.
