Budget constraints hinder internal roads construction
04 Mar 2021
The Ministry of Local Government has not been able to construct internal roads in Maun Administrative Authority due to budgetary constraints.
Responding to a question in Parliament, Mr Sethabelo Modukanele said he was also concerned about the state of roads in major villages, towns and villages across the country.
He said most of the infrastructure was built more than 20 years ago but due to the 2008 economic meltdown his ministry could not cope with routine cyclic maintenance.
Mr Modukanele said out of the cumulative P150 million that had been requested over the past 10 years, P79 million was released to the North West District Council for maintaining internal roads within the entire district.
He said in addition, P37 million was disbursed from the road levy fund from 2015 to 2019.
The funds were used for construction of 2.8km Makalamabedi road, resealing of other roads and asphalt overlay in Maun internal roads.
The minister said from the P79 million, 53 per cent was disbursed to the Maun Administrative Authority.
Maun West MP, Mr Dumelang Saleshando had asked the minister to state the total amount allocated to the Maun Administrative Authority for the construction of internal roads in the past 10 financial years.
He also wanted to know what percentage it constituted of the total amount requested by the Authority. Ends
