28 Feb 2021

Majwe Mining Joint Venture has been hailed for its benevolence in the area of its influence over the years.

The recognition of the good deeds by the company was made by various speakers when Majwe donated used furniture to the Jwaneng Town Council (JTC) on Friday.

The furniture will be used at the council’s halfway home, a temporary shelter accommodating mostly victims of gender based violence.

One of the speakers who is also the town mayor, Ms Olga Ditsie indicated that since their construction, the structures have been lacking furniture to be used by the victims owing to the council’s financial constraints.

“We badly needed such furniture as beds and others because most of our victims leave their homes hurriedly, and when one leaves in those circumstances, they have no time to collect any necessities. So the donation by Majwe is both vital and timely,” she said.

Ms Ditsie also said that the halfway homes were very important in the fight against GBV as it had the potential to help save people’s lives.

The chairperson of the education, health and social serves committee, Councilor Tshepo Mothulwe indicated that in the face of all the social ills that might come with family dynamics, JTC found it fit to request for funds to construct the homes and assist those in dire need of protection.

He said that the home was used as a temporary shelter for various groups such as GBV victims, children in need of care and protection, victims of natural disasters and the homeless among others.

He said that only two houses out of a total of seven were furnished. “This then motivated the request for donation from our partner, Majwe. I wish to appreciate them for having acceded to our request,” he said.

For his part, Majwe Mining’s health, safety and environment superintendent, Mr Vincent Osupeng said that since its establishment, Majwe had purposely played a profound role in the lives of people in its environs, and that the company aimed to impact the lives of people in the area with sustainable means even beyond the company’s departure.

He said in that way, they saw it fit to house the compromised groups in society who were in need of temporary shelter, adding that the donation by his company was just a fraction of what needed to be done looking at the rate of poverty in the country.

“I would therefore like to encourage all to lend a helping hand where you can, be it through your organisation’s programmes or as individual volunteers,” he said.

The donation comprised of a variety of furniture such as office chairs, beds, dining tables, gas cylinders and an assortment of bedding among others. Ends
