Boro Prison official, Senior Superintendent Gabriel Magole has cautioned against stigmatisation of ex-convicts.
Updating the Maun Administration Authority (MAA) Councillors in Maun recently, Senior Superintendent Magole said it was disturbing that ex-offenders were labeled with the offences they committed even after serving prison terms and being rehabilitated.
“Ex-convicts need to be welcomed back to the society when released from prison as the prison has done its best to rehabilitate them,” he said.
On other matters, Mr Magole said the Maun Prison needed a junction from the main road to help control traffic movement, which posed a threat to the prison, situated beside the road.
He also complained about road that led to Boro Prison, which he said was in bad state and needed to be repaired.
When commenting, Boro-Senonnori councillor Mr Kenson Kgaga concurred that ex-convicts should be assimilated in the society.
Mr Kgaga pointed out that people went to prison for different reasons, saying some maybe wrongfully accused or committed crimes by mistake therefore should be welcomed once they complete serving their sentences.
He also encouraged members of the public to make a habit of assisting prison inmates with necessities as toiletries.
Responding to questions, Senior Superintendent Magole said Maun Boro Prison had a capacity of 240 inmates while Maun Prison had a capacity of 161.
He noted that Maun Prison empowered prisoners with carpentry and upholstery while Boro Prison was involved in farming and that there was a revolving fund to assist prisoners who were released. Ends
