Debswana donates to Letlhakane DHMT

25 Feb 2021

Debswana Mining Company has donated a seven seater combi and a sedan  to Letlhakane District Health Management Team to be used for COVID-19 contact tracing.

The donations, which were handed over on Tuesday, were hailed by Assistant Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Sethomo Lelatisitswe, saying they would improve quality health care services.

He added that COVID-19 had stretched the ministry’s resources, including human and vehicles and that the donation would help.

Mr Lelatisitswe said the vehicles would augment what was already available in the district and enable health workers to reach out to a wide area and provide timely service.

He said the vehicles would be used in the Letlhakane and Rakops catchment areas. He noted that the sub-district had registered 1 945 COVID-19 cases and that it had 519 active cases.

He also said an average of 30 to 60 new cases were diagnosed per day. He also noted that 60 or more contacts were traced per day, adding that due to lack of transport, the sub-district had failed to reach out to some contacts.

Orapa, Letlhakane and Damtshaa Mines general manager, Mr Bakani Motlhabani said the donation followed an engagement they had with the Orapa community leadership regarding COVID-19 management strategies, and that they decided to donate used cars.

Mr Motlhabani also noted that the mine provided support to 34 schools in Boteti to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 and that they had spent P680 000.

He said 18 schools had utilised the funds to procure geysers, jojo tanks, sanitisers and dispensers while 11 had begun the procurement processes.

He added that five schools had not yet used the funds and that they were finalising procurement plans. Deputy council chairperson, Mr Batsweletse Kgagamedi thanked Debswana for the donation. ENDS
