Chair urges councillors to come up with revenue sources

25 Feb 2021

Acting Moshupa subordinate council chairperson has urged councillors to come up with more revenue streams to off-set budget constraints.

Mr Obakeng Modisaotsile said this during the ongoing sub council meeting in Moshupa.

He noted that the proposed budget for the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development had been reduced by P12.34 million.

He added that it meant reduced revenue support grants for district councils.

Mr Modisaotsile challenged councillors to come up with strategies to maximise revenue collection in order to help council navigate the financial quagmire.

He revealed that the proposed recurrent budget for the 2021/22 financila year was P83 595 480.

He noted that it was a decline from the current financial year which was P84 959 710.

Mr Modisaotsile said most of the funds would be channeled towards personnel emoluments and running expenses, adding that the construction and maintenance of projects would be minimal.

He noted that only two projects: Construction of the Moshupa primary hospital and Moshupa sanitation project had been approved for implementation during the NDP 11 plan period.

He noted that the construction of the hospital and staff houses was ongoing with 232 people employed.

He said the Moshupa sanitation project, worth P893 million, had also commenced.

He further informed councillors that plans were underway to upgrade the Pitseng, Sesung, Moshupa and Manyana clinics and that tender documents had been vetted.

On other issues, Mr Modisaotsile, who is also the councillor for Lotlhakane West ward, said community constituency projects planned for the 2020/21 financial year had been halted due to budget constraints.

He said the focus was on the completion of 2019/20 projects, revealing that out of the 50 projects, 45 were complete while five were still ongoing.  ends
