Okavango sub council empowers locals
24 Feb 2021
Okavango Sub-district council continues to empower residents through the purchase of bread for primary schools from beneficiaries who own bakeries.
Speaking during the sub district council meeting, chairperson, Mr Mpoke Karapo said beneficiaries who specialised in sewing also continued to have the council’s support as they were awarded jobs to supply schools with uniform.
“Eighty-three beneficiaries have been awarded contracts to supply bread to primary schools until March 2021. During the quarter, a total amount of P1 207 604 50 was paid by council to the beneficiaries for provision of services such as school breakfast, sewing and hair dressing among others,” he said.
Mr Karapo, however, noted that catering beneficiaries had been negatively affected due to suspension of workshops following COVID-19.
He also said council continued to provide social safety nets to vulnerable members of the community.
Mr Karapo highlighted that the council managed to procure services such as supply of both food commodities and toiletry to destitute persons from locals.
He noted that during the reporting quarter, the number of destitute persons decreased to 2 686 compared to 2 696 last quarter. He said the reduction came about as a result of re-assessment of temporary destitute persons and deaths.
The council chairperson further said 1 877 needy pupils were assisted compared to 2 096 in the previous quarter. He attributed the decline to the completion of Form Three and Form five pupils.
He noted that the number of children in need of care and protection rose to 391 from 373, while the number of orphans assisted was reduced to 827 from 833. ENDS
