Khwai Primary School opens

24 Feb 2021

Khwai Primary School, which was donated by the Gross family, opened its doors for pupils on  February 1.

Officially opening the Maun Administration Authority (MAA) council meeting recently, chairperson, Mr Vepaune Moreti, said the primary school started with an enrollment of 94 pupils, inclusive of 34 pupils who were transferred from Kareng Primary School.

He noted that the school was fully fledged and enrolled Standard One to seven pupils.

The chairperson also said Nxaraga Primary School, which was operating as a satellite school with Standard One to five classes only, had started enrolling Standard Six and seven pupils from January.

On other issues, Mr Moreti said the council had put measures in place to minimise the spread of COVID-19 in the Maun area.

He said inspections were carried out at pre-schools as well as primary, secondary and tertiary schools. He added that businesses, government institutions and social events were also inspected.

Mr Moreti, however, said compliance to COVID-19 protocols remained a challenge at social events, especially funerals where there was improper wearing of masks and the absence of thermometres and registers.

Commenting on the chairperson’s remarks, the councillor for Boseja North, Mr Limit Banyatsang praised the  establishment of a primary school in Khwai.

Mr Banyatsang said children of Khwai would be monitored by their parents and not be exposed to boarding school at a young age as was the case in Kareng.

Councillor for Thamalakane North, Ms Gakologelwang Bethia expressed happiness that Khwai Primary School was finally opened.

Ms Bethia said the opening of the school would help the council to reduce costs that were spent on sending pupils to boarding school. She said the school would also help pupils to be closer to their parents. ENDS
