Projects completion delay worrisome
24 Feb 2021
Some constituency projects from 2017/18 are still ongoing with 30 out of 39 projects across Letlhakeng/Lephephe and Takatokwane constituencies completed.
Speaking during the official opening of Letlhakeng Sub-district council meeting this week, sub council chairperson, Mr Meshack Tshenyego said 24 out of 32 projects at the two constituencies were completed under the 2018/19 funding cycle, and that contractors were completing the remaining projects.
“As for the 2019/20 programme, only 11 projects out of 26 are complete and the remaining are still ongoing. High value projects that have not been completed include Motokwe Brick Moulding, Tsetseng Cultural Village, Salajwe Post Office, Kaudwane Guest House and staff houses across the sub district.”
Mr Tshenyego noted that they managed to procure building material for labour only projects to facilitate completion before 31 March 2021.
He said the slow delivery of projects was a result of a combination of factors. He said incompetent contractors and building material suppliers, poor project management, inadequate technical personnel and lack of transport to facilitate project inspections were some of the challenges.
The sub council chairperson, who is also councillor for Mantshwabisi, said in 2017 Kweneng District Council took a resolution to empower local contractors and building material suppliers by ensuring that tenders related to constituency projects were exclusive to local businesses.
“As painful as it is to accept reality, most of these local businesses and artisans have failed our sub district as we now see overdue projects such as the Motokwe brick moulding, project, Tsetseng cultural village, Kaudwane guest house and staff houses at Dutlwe, Tshwaane and Sesung,” he said.
Mr Tshenyego said they have set another timeline for delivery of all projects and others by 31 March 2021.ENDS
