21 Feb 2021

A sub-regional education office in Letlhakeng has scored an overall performance of 25.3 per cent in the 2020 Junior Certificate Examinations, an increase from the 24.6 per cent registered in the 2019 academic year.

Speaking in an interview, principal education office, Mr Mokwadi Tese, said they had experienced a gradual increase in academic performance since 2017.

He said in 2017, they scored an overall performance of 21.4 per cent, 22.3 per cent in 2018, 23.6 per cent in 2019 and now 25.3 per cent in 2020.

Mr Tese said they were trying hard to add value to performance every year and remained positive for better results, despite challenges.

He said they had scored 9As, and 69Bs, 162Cs, 333Ds and 219Us out of a total of 948 pupils who sat for the exams.

He said the results called for more concerted efforts in bringing the best out of every learner to secure a better future for them.

Mr Tese said they had not met the national target, but made a steady move towards the target which gives them hope that they will excel.

He said despite the hiccup brought by COVID-19 in the learning process, the sub-region was faced with challenges among them teachers who refused to work in the sub-district when posted there.

He said this, therefore, end up causing more workload for already strained teachers who have to assist classes that do not have teachers.

He also noted that they have to deal with over-congestion in boarding facilities leading to ill-discipline among the boarding students.

Mr Tese said they had taken a decision to enhance in-service training for teachers as it was necessary to modernize teaching methods that will excite students. ENDS
