Ministry assist teachers to access services
18 Feb 2021
The Ministry of Basic education is committed to assisting teachers in the remotest areas of Ghanzi, North West and Kgalagadi regions to travel to access banking services on a monthly basis.
Minister Fidelis Molao said the assistance rendered was sporadic due to the ministry’s limited transport compared to the numbers of teachers who needed the assistance.
He told Parliament on Wednesday that the education office in the Kgalagadi region had engaged sister departments in the region to share and assist teachers with transport.
“This initiative is also supported by the village extension teams and is working quite well,” he said. Mr Molao pointed out that the ministry continued to improve the service, while teachers were encouraged to make full use of available public transport and existing technologies such as cellphone banking.
He was answering a question from Kgalagadi North Member of Parliament, Ms Talitha Monnakgotla who had asked if the minister was aware that teachers stationed in rural settlements struggled with accessing banking facilities and buying necessities on month end. Ms Monnakgotla also wanted the minister to state when he would assist teachers with transport. Ends
