IEC in process of paying remaining 12 officials
17 Feb 2021
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) engaged 21 987 election officials during the 2019 elections and 21 975 had since been fully paid while only 12 remained unpaid.
The Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration, Mr Kabo Morwaeng told Parliament on Monday that out of the unpaid 12, five were deceased but their funds had been transferred to their respective ministries and beneficiaries were in consultation with the High Court to have payments made to them.
Mr Morwaeng said three had retired from the public service but their funds had been transferred to their former ministries while one would be paid by end of February, another in March 2021 while the third would be paid in the next financial year because the ministry had reported over-expenditure in the overtime account.
He also noted that payments for four officers had delayed although their funds had been transferred to their respective ministry and they would be paid by March 2021.
The minister was responding to a question from the MP for Mahalapye West, Mr David Tshere who wanted to know the number of people who were engaged by the Independent Electoral Commission during the 2019 General Elections as election officials.
Mr Tshere also wanted to know whether they had all received their payments in full for work done; and if not, when they would be fully paid. Ends
