Batswana have been urged to do their best to manage the spread of COVID-19.
The call was made by Minister of International Affairs and Cooperation Dr Lemogang Kwape during a handing over ceremony for disinfectants and face shields to be distributed among schools and other public facilities in Kanye.
Dr Kwape, who is Kanye South MP, noted that the pandemic had added to the already existing challenges in the education sector.
He said it was therefore imperative for all stakeholders to play a role in the fight against COVID-19.
“We need to take this pandemic seriously and ensure that all protocols are followed at all times. We should extend the same spirit to our homes to protect the vulnerable groups such as the elderly,” he said.
Dr Kwape applauded frontline workers and essential service providers for their dedication and commitment in the fight against COVID-19.
Southern region principal education officer - inspectorate, Ms Keneilwe Champane said normal teaching and learning were ongoing despite some teachers and pupils being on quarantine.
She said strategies would be devised to ensure they caught up after recovery.
Noting a decline in Junior Certificate performance between 2019 and 2020, Ms Champane called on stakeholders to come together and develop ways to improve examination results.
She applauded Dr Kwape for adopting some schools in the region, something which she said would positively contribute towards improving academic performance.
BOSETU representative Mr Godiraone Kootshabe commended Dr Kwape for responding to the challenges faced by the education sector.
Mr Kootshabe said the minister’s donation of face shields to teachers showed his acknowledgement of the role they played and their vulnerability to COVID-19.
He encouraged schools to share the little resources fairly.
The community was urged to ensure that children adhered to protocols even outside the school premises. Ends
