Corona on rise at greater Selebi Phikwe zone

14 Feb 2021

Greater Selebi Phikwe District Health Management Team (DHMT) coordinator, Mr Mpaphi Mbulawa has appealed to the communities of Selebi Phikwe, Bobonong and Mmadinare clusters to adhere to COVID-19 health protocols.

He said in an interview that COVID-19 positive cases were on the rise, and called on everybody in the region to adhere to COVID-19 health protocols.

He said all the isolation centres in the zone were full, hence some patients were isolated at Matsiloje, while some were isolated at home.

Mr Mbulawa also noted that since the region had no ICU facility, patients in critical conditions were referred to Sir Ketumile Masire Teaching Hospital in Gaborone.

He said behavioural change was the only solution to beating the pandemic, adding that people should avoid gathering in public places including shopping areas.

He urged parents to also help schools manage COVID-19  by ensuring that children stayed home after school.

Mr Mbulawa emphasised the importance of cleaning facilities and surfaces thoroughly to reduce transmission of the virus and encouraging customers or employees to wash hands or sanitise regularly.

He expressed concern about people who only covered the mouths with masks, leaving the nose uncovered, thus putting themselves and other people at a high risk of contracting COVID-19.

He said the total number of positive cases in the zone stood at 1 593 with 631 active cases and 51 new cases.

He added that to date, the region had registered a total of 15 COVID-19 related deaths, with the Bobonong cluster registering seven, while Selebi Phikwe and Mmadinare registered five and three respectively.

He said Bobonong cluster also had 288 active cases, followed by Selebi Phikwe with 188, while Mmadinare had 91 cases. Ends
