Selebi Phikwe junior schools shine

09 Feb 2021

Four Selebi Phikwe junior secondary schools of Meepong, Mojamorago, Makhubu and Phatsimo are in the 2020 JCE Top 10 list.

Selebi Phikwe chief education officer, Mr Tshwarelo Hosia, said in an interview that the just released JCE results showed that the town’s schools had performed well.

He commended the four schools, revealing that Meepong JSS, which had been doing well for quite some time, scooped position two nationally and position one in the central district, with a 76.2 per cent ABC pass mark.

Mr Hosia said the results did not come as a surprise because Selebi Phikwe had built a culture of excellence where teachers and pupils strive to do their best.

He also attributed the sterling performance to good management, saying there was a link between the school leadership and pupils’ performance.

He said all teachers were fundamentally good and could deliver very well if properly guided, hence good leadership was critical in the life of a school.

“The school head is the biggest game changer in a school, everything begins with creating a foundation for academic success, that is setting high expectations for learners and staff, setting high targets and instilling positive attitudes on both learners and teachers,” he stressed.

He urged school heads to continue setting high expectations and consistently monitoring teaching and learning to ensure that every teacher took responsibility for what happened in their respective classrooms.

Furthermore, Mr Hosia explained that Selebi Phikwe had also built a culture of collaboration between schools and also prescribe common tests as well as share best practices, which he said brought improvement in both teaching and learning.

He also commended the community and other stakeholders for the overwhelming support they give to schools, stressing that parental support was very critical in bringing good results.

He also commended Mojamorago JSS for making it to the top 10 after many years of underperformance, saying that the school, which scooped position three regionally and position four nationally, had potential. ends
