Orthosurge Botswana has embarked on a project to refurbish some of Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital offices into wound and stoma care clinic as a way to give back to the community.
The wound and stoma care clinic will be used to facilitate care and consultations for wound and stoma patients who had operations, on abdomen and linked to either their digestive or urinary system to permit waste or urine out of the body.
Speaking during the ground-breaking ceremony on Friday, Orthosurge Botswana managing director Mr Oremeng Motshegare noted that upon completion of the project, which is expected to take a month, would enhance access to health care services particularly for stoma and wound patients in the northern region.
“Orthosurge Botswana is excited to be part of the project of refurbishing the wound and stoma care clinic in Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital as we do have a long history with the hospital to providing it with vital health care products and services,” he said.
Mr Motshegare said Orthosurge Botswana remained hopeful for the completion of the project and that they would partner with the hospital to complete many other projects in the future.
Wound, ostomy and continence care nurse, Ms Kopano Christmas acknowledged Orthosurge Botswana for coming to their aid to refurbish the clinic as the hospital had been very challenged by lack of a wound and stoma care base to assist patients.
She said that ostomy/stoma unit at Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital was started in 2012 and had been run by a few ostomy nurses out of interest without a base where patients can be consulted within the hospital.
“This has been the biggest challenge because there is often so much care and consultations that need to happen after the patient has had the surgery, right from how they should maintain hygiene and how to dispose waste,” she added.
She said the clinic would come in handy as they would have ample space to assist the patients, adding that it would now be able to follow-up clients.
Ms Christmas said she was hopeful that in due course another satellite clinic would be open in Maun and Shakawe.
In closing, general surgery head of department, Dr Obed Mcharo acknowledged Orthosurge Botswana for their contribution towards NRH’s patient care and Botswana.
He said the ground breaking was just the beginning of a complex work ahead that would require good mastership, supervision and lots of money to complete, adding that the hospital management would forever be thankful as Orthosurge Botswana was committed to completing the project. ENDS
